DEBATE on “Losing Salvation” Listen Here.
Outline:
CONTEXT (of “Falling from Grace”)
COVENANT (Larger Context of Biblical Framework of Salvation)
Detailed Notes:
In 5:4 there are two images (taken as “losing salvation”): severed and fallen.
“You are severed from Christ” (ESV): katergeo is used 27x, 25 by Paul; ESV translates this as “use, nullify, abolish, overthrow, void, brought to nothing, pass away, destroy, gave up, brought to an end, taken away and released (with apo in Rom 7:6).” KJV is right in rendering it, “Christ is become of no effect unto you.” GS trans.: rendered void of Messiah’s [faithfulness].
In 5:4b: “You have fallen away from grace” Ekpipto 10x. The ESV renders this term: “chains fell off, run aground, run on the rocks, let go, failed, fall, lose.” In Acts 27 it is repeatedly used in the nautical context: “27:17 fearing that they would run aground 27:26 But we must run aground on some island. 27:29 And fearing that we might run on the rocks 27:32 soldiers cut away the ropes of the ship’s boat and let it go.”
GS trans. You were rendered void of Messiah’s [faithfulness], you who are seeking to be justified by Torah; you have run aground in [the sea of] grace.
?Galatians 5 - With freedom Messiah has released us: Stand firm, therefore, and do not again submit to a yoke of slavery. 2 Behold I, Paul, say to you that if you are circumcised, Christ will be of no advantage to you. 3 But I again stand to witness to every man who is circumcised, that he is a debtor to keep the whole Torah {note: which shows Israel’s infidelity and shows the hope of a coming Messiah}. 4 You [will be] rendered void of Messiah’s [faithfulness], you who are seeking to be justified by Torah; you have run aground in [the sea of Jesus’] grace. 5 For in the Spirit, out of faith, we eagerly await (Rom. 8:19) the certain hope of righteousness a {now in Messiah and in the future eschaton Rom. 2:12-16}. 6 For in Christ Jesus circumcision nor uncircumcision accomplishes anything, but faith through the working [accomplishment] of love. (GS trans.)
