External cleanliness is of next to no value. All our vaunted evidences showing our piety and purity are worthless if they do not flow from a heart that has been purified. The Pharisees and Scribes prided themselves in their meticulous observance of the tradition of the Fathers. But our Lord rebuked them hotly for setting aside the commandments of God. To avoid doing the same we must always place the weightier matters of the Law first. The man or woman who loves God and neighbor, who loves mercy, and who walks humbly with his God; that man will be clean where it counts.
