Psalm 23 from the Geneva Bible (1560, 1599) - A Psalme of Dauid. The Lorde is my shephearde, I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to rest in greene pasture, and leadeth me by the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soule, and leadeth me in the paths of righteousnesse for his Names sake. 4 Yea, though I should walke through the valley of the shadowe of death, I will feare no euill: for thou art with me: thy rod and thy staffe, they comfort me. 5 Thou doest prepare a table before me in the sight of mine aduersaries: thou doest anoynt mine head with oyle, and my cuppe runneth ouer. 6 Doubtlesse kindnesse and mercie shall followe me all the dayes of my life, and I shall remaine a long season in the house of the Lord.
John 10:14 - I am that good shepheard, and knowe mine, and am knowen of mine.
1 John 3:16 - Hereby haue we perceiued loue, that he layde downe his life for vs: therefore we ought also to lay downe our liues for the brethren.
A. YHWH as Shepherd (1-2)
B. YHWH Restores and Guides (3)
C. YHWH Protects from Enemies (4-5a)
B’ YHWH Refreshes and Blesses (5b-6a)
A’ YHWH as Supplier/Host (6b)
Psalm 23 has two sections with two master metaphors:
A. The Lord is My Shepherd (vv.1-4)
[CENTER HINGE IS the Lord is Protector/Valley of Death 4b-5a]
B. The Lord is My Supplier (vv.5-6)
The LORD is Jesus’ Shepherd. Jesus hyper-fulfilled this Psalm. Jesus went into the true death and yet he would live in the House of the Lord forever.
