Augustine distinguishes three types of lies: playful lies, destructive lies, and obliging (helpful) lies. While destructive lies are forbidden by God, playful lies and obliging lies are not. So when Isaac deceived Abimelech, was he committing a destructive lie or an obliging lie? Should we praise Isaac for his shrewdness or should we condemn him for his duplicity?
