Ephesians 6:5–9 NKJV - Bondservants, be obedient to those who are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in sincerity of heart, as to Christ; 6:6 not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, 6:7 with goodwill doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men, 6:8 knowing that whatever good anyone does, he will receive the same from the Lord, whether he is a slave or free. 6:9 And you, masters, do the same things to them, giving up threatening, knowing that your own Master also is in heaven, and there is no partiality with Him.

“Be nice to one another.” Every child has heard this plea many times from their parents and every parent feels like they have said this thousands of times—and perhaps they have. But it is just not parents and children that struggle with being nice. A major stereotype of Christians is that we are judgmental, unforgiving, and ultimately, not nice—people really think Christians are mean. As a matter of fact, if you ask the master of all human knowledge, the Google search engine, the question: “Why are Christians so mean?” you get almost three million responses! Perhaps being nice is really hard for everyone. Believe it or not, there is a page on wikiHow titled “How to Be Nice.”...

Mr. Stuart W. Bryan - Nehemiah Part VII - Hear, O Our God [Dealing with Opposition, Part I] (4:1-6)

It is the danger that arises from those who oppose God that emerges from our text today. When we serve God and determine to glorify Him, determine to do what He wants us to do and proclaim His Lordship over all of life, all of society, then we’re going to face opposition from those who do not want to honor him. They are going to start shooting at us. Things will get dangerous. And when those in opposition have influence and numbers, that opposition will frequently be menacing and threatening; when they have absolute power, that opposition can even be deadly.

Today Nehemiah teaches us how to respond to such opposition, how to handle the danger – we must entrust ourselves to God, praying that He would vindicate His Name and advance His kingdom, all the while continuing to build Jerusalem. And because we are at war, to pray for the advance of God’s kingdom is simultaneously to pray for the overthrow of the kingdom of the evil one. As the Kingdom of Light expands it does so to the detriment of the kingdom of darkness. And we are called to pray for this very thing.

Pastor Jeff Harlow - The Bride's Attire - Colossians 3:12-14

Status and attire - these two go together, or at least they ought to. A police officer should wear a police uniform. A judge should wear that black robe. And the Church of Jesus Christ ought to wear the white robes of righteousness. Continuing on where we left off last week, we see that Paul not only wants us to put off our old, worldly ways but to put on the virtues that befit our new status.
