But it is just not parents and children that struggle with being nice. A major stereotype of Christians is that we are judgmental, unforgiving, and ultimately, not nice—people really think Christians are mean. As a matter of fact, if you ask the master of all human knowledge, the Google search engine, the question: “Why are Christians so mean?” you get almost three million responses! Perhaps being nice is really hard for everyone. Bryan - Nehemiah Part VII - Hear, O Our God [Dealing with Opposition, Part I] (4:1-6)

It is the danger that arises from those who oppose God that emerges from our text today. When we serve God and determine to glorify Him, determine to do what He wants us to do and proclaim His Lordship over all of life, all of society, then we’re going to face opposition from those who do not want to honor him. They are going to start shooting at us. Things will get dangerous. And when those in opposition have influence and numbers, that opposition will frequently be menacing and threatening; when they have absolute power, that opposition can even be deadly.

Today Nehemiah teaches us how to respond to such opposition, how to handle the danger – we must entrust ourselves to God, praying that He would vindicate His Name and advance His kingdom, all the while continuing to build Jerusalem. And because we are at war, to pray for the advance of God’s kingdom is simultaneously to pray for the overthrow of the kingdom of the evil one. As the Kingdom of Light expands it does so to the detriment of the kingdom of darkness. And we are called to pray for this very thing.

More audio from Trinity Church

More audio by <a href="http://www.wordmp3.com/speakers/profile.aspx?id=104" title="Mr. Stuart W. John proclaims that we may have fellowship (koinonia) with the Father and Son. Koinonia is really just “life” in and with other Persons. The recurring theme of assurance is summarized here. He says of the entire Epistle, “I have written to you” in order that “you may know that you have eternal life” (5:13). This assurance is directly connected to our confidence in our petitions before the Lord (5:14). Similar to a previous passage (3:22) “whatever we ask we receive from Him” because it is “according to His will.” Confidence in prayer is an outcome of knowing we have life in Him.

He Has Written to Apply to Us Eternal Life (5:16-19) - “There is a sin leading to death . . . no one who is born of God sins.” The discussion of prayer leads to the efficacy of our prayers for those committing sin. John marks out a category of sin, “a sin leading to death” (hamartia pros thanaton). There are three views of what this could be: a) a specific deadly sin (Num. 15:27, “high-handed” sin); b) blasphemy against the Holy Spirit (Matt. 12:32); or c)...

More audio from All Saints Presbyterian Church

More audio by Dr. Gregg Strawbridge

Date: 7/11/2010

Mr. Stuart W. Bryan - Nehemiah Part VI - Next to One Another (3:1-32)

Today in our text we find Nehemiah using a shrewd tactic in the rebuilding of Jerusalem’s walls. He secures the aid of all the inhabitants of Jerusalem to do their part removing the reproach of Jerusalem and making her glorious. They work side by side, shoulder to shoulder, standing next to one another with each repairing a specific section of the wall, a section of the wall nearest to their heart. In so doing, Nehemiah teaches us an important lesson. Our calling as the people of God, building Jerusalem – Mt. Zion – here in Coeur d’Alene, is to labor side by side, each doing our work to make the bride of Christ more lovely. We cannot all do everything, but if each of us does our part, executes faithfully the charge that is put in front of us, then we shall be assured of victory. You see, it is Christ, the Greater Nehemiah, who has put us in our position; Christ who has given us our particular gifts and abilities; Christ who empowers us by His Spirit to serve Him where He has put us; Christ who calls us to rise to the occasion. Our calling, in Him, is to stand fast, to labor side by side, to stand next to one another and so rebuild the walls of Jerusalem – making her a glory and removing her reproach.

More audio from Trinity Church

More audio by <a href="http://www.wordmp3.com/speakers/profile.aspx?id=104" title="Mr. Stuart W. What does it mean that Jesus came by “water and blood”? There are three main views: 1) Luther and Calvin thought it referred to sacraments, baptism (water) and communion (blood). 2) Augustine saw the “water and blood” as the crucifixion when from his side came “blood and water” (John 19:34–35). 3) Tertullian probably has it right, though he is usually to be less trusted that Luther, Calvin or Augustine. He and most commentators see the “water and blood” as punctuating Jesus’ earthly ministry which began with His baptism (water) and ended with His crucifixion (blood). This view makes more sense of the false teaching context where Jesus humanity (thus real death) was being denied. It was “not with the water only” (5:6) - not that Jesus was anointed Messiah in his baptism only. Rather Jesus was Messiah in his blood-death (propitiation) as well.

The Testimony of the Spirit (56b-9) - “It is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. 5:7 For there are three that testify: 5:8 the Spirit and the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement. . . ” The doctrine of the “internal...

More audio from All Saints Presbyterian Church

More audio by Dr. Gregg Strawbridge

Date: 7/4/2010

Dr. Gregg Strawbridge - 1 John (9): The Centrality of Love (4:7-5:5)

You May Know: An Exposition of First John (part 9)

The Centrality of Love

1) The Root of Love is the Triune God. In this section of 1 John we find simple yet profound truths revealing the nature of the Triune God of the Bible. "God is love" is revealed twice (4:8, 16). No other religious perspective can credibly maintain this. Many other worldview claimants do not even try to do so. For God to be love, He must be personal and "multi-personal" so that each person of the Godhead loves one another. John moves from the statement that "God is love" to the sending of the Son into the world to manifest His love (4:9). This is the foundation of our faith. It is not based upon our own ability to love, rather, "In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us." Our acceptance does not consist in our performance of love, but in God’s love for us through His Son who is the propitiation for our sins. Christ lived the life we could not live and died the death we should have died. The origin of this redemption is God’s very nature - love. God loved, therefore Christ came and died.

2) The Reflection of Love is our response to seeing God as He is. Grasping the Source of love is transforming. If we see how God has loved, then we "ought to love one another" (4:11). While natural eyes cannot see God, His reality is manifested in our loving. We are to be the image of God’s love in the world....

More audio from All Saints Presbyterian Church

More audio by Dr. Gregg Strawbridge

Date: 6/27/2010

Mr. Stuart W. This word (dokimazo) refers to refining metal. “. . . Gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw. . . it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test (dokimazo) the quality of each man’s work” (1Cor. 3:13). This is a call for us to be discerning of the “spirits” or “winds” of doctrine. Throughout Scripture we have the responsibility to listen to God’s Word through His authorized representatives (Moses, Prophets, Apostles, etc). John says in 4:6, “We are from God; he who knows God listens to us; he who is not from God does not listen to us.” Departing from God’s revealed truth in the Word of God opens one for deceiving spirits. “But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron...” (1 Tim. 4:1-2). Bryan - Nehemiah Part IV - Taking His Life in His Hands (2:1-10)

Last week we unfolded the meaning of covenantal living. To live life covenantally rather than individually means to identify with and pray for those with whom we are in covenant. For Nehemiah, this covenantal mentality manifest itself in a radical identification with the people of Israel. They were his people. He found his joy in the exaltation and greatness of Israel. So too, we discovered, we are to be covenantally minded. We are to identify with and pray for the people of God – for the Church.

Today we learn the extent to which Nehemiah identified with the people of God. For the sake of the people of God, Nehemiah took his life in his hands, risked death. And God rescued him and raised him up to lead and bless the people of God.

More audio from Trinity Church

More audio by <a href="http://www.wordmp3.com/speakers/profile.aspx?id=104" title="Mr. Stuart W.
