Deuteronomy 6:4-7: “Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one! 6:5 “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6:6 “These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. 6:7 “You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.”

1) Believe that the LORD alone is our God (v4) - Is this “oneness” monotheism or monolatry or the uniqueness of the Lord vs other gods? These six words have been translated in various ways: “Yahweh is our God, Yahweh is ‘One’” - “Yahweh our God is the Unique” - “Our God is Yahweh is the only god” - Each of these is true, but the best translation fits with the whole context (esp., 5:5-8): “Yahweh is our God, Yahweh alone!” The very word Yahweh (“I am that I am”) means uniqueness and absolute divinity. But the stress in context is that Israel is to trust and worship only the Covenant Lord (Yahweh). He delivered is us and is worthy of our trust and worship. What unbelief(s) compromise your family?

Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good. 12:10 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor; 12:11 not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; 12:12 rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer, 12:13 contributing to the needs of the saints, practicing hospitality.

Living as Sacrifices (Rom. 12:1-2) - Paul, after showing in detail how Jesus saves us (Rom. 3:25-11:36), now explains how we live as sacrifices as Christians. We follow Christ (ch. 8) and become conformed to Him (Rom. 8:29; Phil. 3:10). We also offer ourselves through worship and service in the new humanity that enters Eden/Zion above through the second Adam.

Catholic Church and Community Church - The Bible addresses the Church as a whole (the “catholic” or universal church), the People redeemed from all ages (Eph 5:25-27, Mat 8:11, Eph 2:12-22, Heb 11:22-24). However, the Scripture most often speaks of local, gathered assembly of believers in a specific community. The Bible speaks of “the church in Jerusalem” (Acts 8:1) which met in many assemblies from house to house (Acts 2:46), “the church that is in their [Prisca and Aquila’s] house” (Rom 16:5), “church of God which is at Corinth” (1Co 1:2), “the church of the Thessalonians” (1Th 1:1), “the church in your [Archippus] house” (Phm 1:2), etc.

Participation in the Catholic Church - From reading Acts (a history of the apostolic church) and the Epistles, we see the apostolic foundation of the Church and churches. These books teach the blessings of redemption in the one Catholic Church which are to be expressed by faith and life as part of a community church (locally). Leaders in those community churches were trained and appointed to care for people (Acts 14:23, 2Ti 2:2, Tit 1:5). “Aaron then brought the offering (qorban, “near bringing”) that was for the people. He took the goat for the people’s sin offering (chattat - “hiding”) and slaughtered it and offered it for a sin offering (yechatte - “hiding/offering”) as he did with the first one. He brought (yaqrev, “near”) the burnt offering (olah, “ascension” Gr. holocaust) and offered it in the prescribed way. He also brought the grain offering (mincha, “gift”) took a handful of it and burned it on the altar in addition to the morning’s burnt offering (olah, “ascension”). He slaughtered the ox and the ram as the fellowship (root is shalom) offering (zevach, “offering/feasting”) for the people....Then Aaron lifted his hands toward the people and blessed them. (Lev 9:15-23 NIV) “But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem . . .” (Heb. 12:22-24).

After all, Jesus came as God's Anointed One, His Messiah, His political Ruler. Now exalted as the King of kings and Lord of lords, the Incarnation announces that God's Ruler is born and that all men and nations are to bow before Him. So as Christ rules and reigns from the right hand of God, what can we expect His rule to look like? As He continues to expand His kingdom, what types of things will he establish in His wake and, therefore, what types of things are we to strive for as human rulers? These are the questions we ask today in a study of Psalm 72.

The Times, They are a Changin’

Luke 2:22–40 - And when the days for their purification according to the law of Moses were completed, they brought Him up to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord 2:23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord . . . 2:25 And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; and this man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel; and the Holy Spirit was upon him. ... 2:36 And there was a prophetess, Anna . . . And she never left the temple, serving night and day with fastings and prayers. 2:38 And at that very moment she came up and began giving thanks to God, and continued to speak of Him to all those who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.

1) Change Comes to those who Live Faithfully, Humbly and in Community (2:22-24, 39-40). Jesus is brought to the temple according to the Law (Lev. 12). This shows the fidelity of Mary and Joseph to the “then revealed” Word of God vv22-23. They did not bypass this historic era into the new covenant. The lived faithfully in it. They also lived humbly as their offering of birds rather than lambs indicates v24. At the end of this passage, we see that they valued and/or needed their home town community enough that “they returned to Galilee, to their own city of Nazareth” v39. Jesus grew up in an ordinary (if not despised) hometown and community.

John 10:1–10 Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter by the door into the fold of the sheep, but climbs up some other way, he is a thief and a robber. 10:2 “But he who enters by the door is a shepherd of the sheep. 10:3 “To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 10:4 “When he puts forth all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. 10:5 “A stranger they simply will not follow, but will flee from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers.” 10:6 This figure of speech Jesus spoke to them, but they did not understand what those things were which He had been saying to them. 10:7 So Jesus said to them again, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 10:8 “All who came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. 10:9 “I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

In the year 1809 . . . Napoleon was front page, but consider the children that were born: William Gladstone, Alfred Tennyson, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Edgar Allan Poe, Charles Darwin, Abraham Lincoln. . . The changed the world.

So we read in Luke 2 of a more important birth . . . Christmas is the event of the birth of the world’s true ruler and it brings light to the world and this light brings salvation, therefore we should have hope congregationally and personally.

1) There is a glorious ruler of the world. There is a great contrast in these verses.

Luke 2:1 Now in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census be taken of all the inhabited earth.

“Caesar Augustus was born Gaius Octavius. He was one of the triumvirate set up to rule the Roman world in 43 BC. In a series of military and political moves he gained sole control of the reins of power, and finally in 27 BC the Roman senate bestowed on him the title Augustus, acknowledging his supreme position. From this date is reckoned the reign of the emperor Caesar Augustus.” (WBC)

Dr. Gregg Strawbridge - The Messiah in Isaiah (Part 9): Isaiah 9

Isaiah 9:1–7 . . .The people who walk in darkness will see a great light . . . 9:6 For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us . . . His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. 9:7 There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore.

We must understand the Crisis of Isaiah’s Day (ch. 7-9). Jerusalem was under the threat of the Northern Kingdom of Israel (allied with Syria) (Is. 7:1). Isaiah sought to reassure Ahaz of the House of David with a confirmation sign but Ahaz rejected the Lord (7:12). Ahaz rejected trusting the Lord but sought to put his trust in Assyria (2Kgs 16:7). The Lord says, “Immanuel” will come and the Davidic covenant will be fulfilled. The rest of the chapter 7 and 8 indicates that Assyria will be God’s instrument of judgment on Israel and Syria, but this will also threaten Judah (Jerusalem).

We must heed the Call to Faith in Isaiah’s God (ch. 8). The story continues in ch. 8 in the birth of “Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz” which probably means “quick to plunder, swift to the spoil.” The plundering of Syria and Samaria by Assyria led Tiglath-pileser III can be dated in 732 B.C. This literal flood of judgment spilled over on Judah (8:7-8)....

Isaiah’s Messiah (part 3): Isaiah 61

Isaiah 61:1–11 - The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, Because the LORD has anointed me To bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives And freedom to prisoners; 61:2 To proclaim the favorable year of the LORD And the day of vengeance of our God . . .

1) We must believe the Message of Messiah to have gospel liberty. The Messiah announces both blessing and judgment (61:1-3). Jesus was “anointed” (Messiah/Christ) as a prophet-king in His baptism in fulfillment of this text which is the basis for His first message in His hometown synagogue in Nazareth (Lk. 4:21). He warned of judgment(s) but also brought the good news of salvation through faith, healing to the broken, and the freedom of forgiveness, deliverance and life eternal. This transforms His followers as illustrated in four poetic images (61:3). a) They have a crown rather than the ashes of mourning. b) They have a soothing oil on their face instead of humiliation. c) They are dressed in festal attire. d) They become oak trees of faithfulness.

2) We must rejoice in the Message to the Nations which gives joy to those inside and outside of Israel (61:4-7). The result of the rebuilding (v4) is that all Israel will be like “priests” and “ministers” whereas “strangers” and “foreigners” (Gentiles) will...

Isaiah’s Messiah (part 2): Isaiah 40

Isaiah 40:1–11 “Comfort, O comfort My people,” says your God. 40:2 “Speak kindly to Jerusalem; And call out to her, that her warfare has ended . . . 40:3 A voice is calling, “Clear the way for the LORD in the wilderness; Make smooth in the desert a highway for our God. 40:4 “Let every valley be lifted up, And every mountain and hill be made low; And let the rough ground become a plain, And the rugged terrain a broad valley; 40:5 Then the glory of the LORD will be revealed. . .

1) The Comfort of the Shepherd comes to His people because His Chastisement is Complete (40:1-2). Isaiah 40 is a striking change of theme from chs. 1-39. Now after the chastisement of the exile, the Covenant Lord promises restoration (deliverance, redemption, salvation) to Zion. The text explains that Judah’s “warfare has ended” and “her iniquity has been removed.” God has chastised His people (historically). This broad lesson is to apply to us quite individually. We are not to forsake the true Lord for idols (as was done in Israel). Their sin and our sin has consequences. Life choices are serious.
