Last week we observed one of the tangible ways that we as God’s people are to be bringing a taste of heaven to earth – we are to thankful, overflowing with gratitude. Another way in which the Church is to be a taste of heaven on earth is in the use of our tongues – the way in which we speak to and about one another. We are familiar with Paul’s exhortation to the Colossians: “Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.” But perhaps it is valuable to ask another question that we less frequently reflect upon – why speak this way? What is the rationale for kingdom language? Communal language?

Mr. Stuart W. Bryan - An EpiPen for Ingratitude

I want us to consider today’s sermon as a sort of EpiPen. For spiritually, no less than physically, there are certain things that if we get them in our system, they will kill us. And one of these is ingratitude. Webster defines ingratitude as “lack of gratitude: forgetfulness of or poor return for kindness received: ungratefulness.” Get a dose of ingratitude in your spiritual system and soon bitterness and resentment will cloud your judgment, your heart will begin to shrivel, and, apart from some intervention, you will die. I hope this will help serve as that intervention.

The LORD is the defense of my life; Whom shall I dread? ... 27:4 One thing I have asked from the LORD, that I shall seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the LORD And to meditate in His temple. . . 27:9 Do not hide Your face from me, Do not turn Your servant away in anger; You have been my help; Do not abandon me nor forsake me . . . 27:14 Wait for the LORD; Be strong and let your heart take courage; Yes, wait for the LORD.

Our Spring Training is firstly, actively growing in faith in Christ. As we looked (last week) at Jesus’ Temptation we should trust Him more since: 1) Jesus is our Captain by fulfilling the call of True Israel and 2) Jesus is our Champion - He was the victor over the devil through trusting the Father at every point. Like Christ we overcome through faith. Faith is the victory that overcomes the world (1John 5:4). This week we will look at the reverse of faith, fear. Our second Lenten Training theme is overcoming anxiety. Casting anxiety the Lord is an active spiritual discipline.

Mr. Stuart W. Bryan - Eschatology Part VIII: Citizens of the Kingdom

For the last seven weeks we have been studying the Kingdom of God. Jesus is the King of Kings, the Lord of all the earth. He established His Kingdom during his ministry, continues to reign in the present during which He is bringing all the nations to honor and worship Him, and will bring the Kingdom to a close when He returns in glory and hands the Kingdom back to His Father, when He relinquishes His Messianic office. In light of the last two weeks and our study of Jesus’ kingdom work in the here and now – that Jesus is in the business of spreading His reign throughout the earth such that all the nations shall serve Him, all shall bow before Him and acknowledge His Lordship – the question naturally arises – How does He go about discipling the nations of the earth?

He has conquered the world, all power in heaven and on earth has been given to our Messiah, how shall he solidify His rule? How does He spread the culture of the Kingdom of God throughout the world, making the world increasingly like heaven? How does He subject the kingdoms of the earth to Himself?

Paul stands and gives a dissenting position. The discipline of God is good. We must therefore yield ourselves to its work. Those whom God loves He chastens. Therefore we must count it good when we suffer and consider ourselves happy when we endure affliction.

Meditation for Ash Wednesday service (February 17, 2010).

Joel 2:13 "Rend your hearts and not your clothing . . . "

The early Christians observed, and many Christians in many different traditions today still observe, a time of focused devotion upon the Lord Jesus Christ during a season of repentance, struggle, and self-denial. This season is called “Lent” from the word meaning the lengthening of days as spring comes. Individually and corporately we have enjoyed benefits from observing this season which begins with Ash Wednesday. These days mark the Forty Days of Jesus in the wilderness in which Jesus faithfully relived the forty years of Israel in the wilderness. The Church begins this season forty days before Easter (not counting Sundays, which are never fast days but always the feast day of Resurrection).

The service for Ash Wednesday leads us into the penitential aspects of the season of Lent by providing a service of prayer and extended confession of sin. We are to appear before God with contrite hearts, knowing our weaknesses and failings. In our confession, instead of immediately hearing the beautiful notes of Absolution, we hear the words: “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” This service creates a memorial to our frailty, as well as sin. Just as in biblical times it is clear that ashes and sackcloth became a symbolic way to represent their official repentance/mourning, so...

Lenten Training (01): Faith is the Victory

Introduction: The Friend of Shah Abbis ... “You left your palace and your glory to sit with me in this dark place, to eat of my course food, to care whether my heart is glad or sorry --- On others you may bestow rich presents, but to me you have given yourself, and it only remains for me to pray that you never withdraw the gift of your friendship.”

As we consider our text today, relating to Jesus Temptation, we can draw two clear parallels that guide our thinking and to motivate us to trust Him more:

a) Jesus gave up his glory to sit and eat our course food and love us.

b) We must be those, like the peasant in the story, who treasure knowing Jesus more than the blessings He gives. We are not to seek the gifts but the Giver.

The first aspect of our Training in this season is actively growing in faith in Christ. As we look at Jesus’ wilderness temptation for forty days we should trust Him more since:

1) Jesus is our Captain - He led Israel as the captain who finally completed their mission, yet alone (Heb. 2:10; Is. 53). Jesus was true Israel (Matt. 2:15). Lent commemorates that part of Jesus’ life which fulfills the pattern of baptism then the passage through the wilderness and into the promised land. Mr. Stuart W. Bryan - Eschatology Part VII: The NT & Historical Optimism

The book of Daniel is, like the Old Testament as a whole, full of anticipation. It looks forward to the coming time when God would establish His kingdom and bring to naught the idolatrous kingdoms of the world. Whether these idolatrous kingdoms are pictured as a massive statue of different metals or a series of wild beasts, the end of the imagery rests with the establishment of God’s kingdom. And in both instances the way in which God’s kingdom is described emphasizes the expansive growth which His kingdom would experience. Whether it is pictured as a rock growing to fill the earth or as the Son of Man inheriting a kingdom such that all nations shall serve Him, the vision of the Messianic Age is very optimistic. These passages from Daniel reinforce what we observed last week – the vision of the Messianic Age in the OT anticipates all the nations of the earth acknowledging the authority of the Messiah prior to the end of history. With these passages in mind, therefore, we approach our question today – Does the NT embrace the notion that all the nations of the earth will acknowledge the Lordship of Christ prior to the end of history, during the course of the Messianic Age?

Our ancestors in the faith, those who came before the arrival of the Christ, endured in hope and clung to God's promises in spite of the fact that what their eyes saw, their ears heard, and what they experienced in life led them to conclude that God's promises were vain and empty. We are often tempted to doubt in the same way. But as Paul told us in the concluding verse of chapter 10, we are not of those who shrink back in unbelief. We are the descendants of those great men and women of faith. it was God's Word that made the cosmos out of nothing. God's promises are likewise mighty to produce the thing promised even when circumstances seem to say there is "nothing", no evidence that what our Lord said will come to pass. Like our great predecessors in the Old Covenant we must endure in hope and persevere in faith even when our natural eyes cannot see.

Living out our biblical faith, renewed to us through covenantal worship, leads us to build community within the congregation and reach out beyond the congregation. We are to do this by developing an active parish life, reaching out to our local communities and extending the gospel to other places through missions. Therefore, we must develop a richer parish life which serves our neighborhoods and seeks to serve real needs.

In order to live in community with one another:

We Must Watch Our Words (4:29-30) so that we do not have unwholesome, rotten or corrupt (sapra) words (Matt. 7:17, 13:48). These tear away at community and poison relationships. Proverbs 18:21 says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.” Words that bring such death actually “grieve” the Holy Spirit.

We Must Guard Our Hearts (4:31-32) so that we do not let bitterness, wrath, anger, grumbling, slander or malice ferment inside. Rather we must let this sin go in the reflection that “God in Christ also has forgiven you” (v 32). This...
