St. John’s Gospel (14) - Sabbath, Authority, and Life(John 5)
The Resurrection Manifest in St. John’s Gospel (07) - Sabbath, Authority, and Life
John 5:19–47 - Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner. . . . 24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life. . . . 28 “Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, 29 and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment. . . . 38 “You do not have His word abiding in you, for you do not believe Him whom He sent. 39 “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me . . . 45 “Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one who accuses you is Moses, in whom you have set your hope. 46 “For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, for he wrote about Me.
The Seven + One New Creation (Signs in John)
1. New Creator: Water into wine (2:1-11)
2. Redeemer/Healer: Prevents death of king’s man’s son (4:46ff)
3. True Sabbath: The paralyzed man at the pool (5:2-9) (sin no more)
4. Bread of Life: Multiplication of loaves (6:1-14)
5. Light of the World: Born blind, healed on Sabbath (9:1-7) (not his sin)
6. Resurrection & Life: Delays/death then raises Lazarus (11:1-44)
7. Living Water: Water & blood on the cross (19:34-35)
+ 8. New Adam/Gardener: The resurrection (20:1-29) “First Day” (8th Day)
The Authority of the Son to Give Life (vv 19-23) - Jesus gives a defense as to why He is authorized to heal on the Sabbath. This is an expansion of v 17: “My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working.” a) The Father and the Son do the same work. b) That work is giving life. The Father “raises” (present tense) the dead and so also will the Son. c) All judgment-authority (for who will have such life) has been given to the Son.
The Life of the Son Gives (vv 24-29) - The Son offers life to all who will believe His word and trust the Father, i.e., those who will receive the Son. This life will immediately come to those who believe and the result is passing out of death now and bodily resurrection the Last Day. In the midst of this word to hostile enemies, Jesus provided one of the clearest, loving, and direct gospel calls as is found in all of Scripture. This word of gospel grace, He said to those who were persecuting Him.
The Testimony of the Son (vv 30-47) - The testimony of the truth of Christ does not rest on His mere human word, but is corroborated by, John the Baptist. But the compelling evidence that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God, comes in the very works Jesus does, e.g., the miracles performed. The signs that this Gospel records offer definitive proof of the truth. Those who do not believe have no excuse. The Scriptures (of the OT) are no witness against Jesus, rather they testify of Jesus. The final word of defense is that Moses will judge them.
