The failure of that generation that came out of Egypt and witnessed all of the Lord's mighty deeds failed to enter into the promised rest for one reason and Paul declares that reason for us in this text. They did not enter in because of unbelief. Faith is the condition of covenant keeping both in the New Covenant and in the Old. For this reason, the failure of our fathers at Kadesh Barnea stands as a shocking warning against apostasy. We must give heed to their bad example. We must not turn back in unbelief.
