As we come to the text in Mark today, the image that Mark is endeavoring to cultivate within our minds as we consider the wilderness testing is that of a contest of champions. Jesus is joining battle with the enemy of God; going head to head with the archenemy who set himself against God and has endeavored to overthrow God’s created order; going in full reliance upon God for protection. The ensuing contest teaches us much about the nature of trials and temptations and should outfit us to approach both with wisdom and grace.
