Communion Meditation:

Christ uses physical, tangible things to awaken our senses to the presence of the kingdom in the world now. He uses physical, tangible things to direct us towards the ultimate goal we have of eternal presence with God through the cross of Jesus Christ.

This meal is one of God’s graces to us, helping us to “dress for action”—helping us to keep our “lamps lit.” And as we remain ready, and stay alert, remember what Jesus said in verse 37 of our passage today: “Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will dress himself for service and have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them.”

That language should remind us of Maundy Thursday, when Jesus dressed as a servant and washed the feet of His Disciples at the Last Supper.

The Lord’s Day is a weekly coming and return of Jesus Christ to His household. He comes to renew covenant with His people, and to call heaven and earth as witnesses of what He finds. He comes to be near His People. And He can either come as a Master who will serve those who are ready for Him, or He can come as a thief who will plunder the earthly treasures of the unprepared.

But we are not in darkness, nor caught unawares. And indeed, The Lord’s Supper is His service to us. So come and eat and drink, and recline at the Table. Jesus Christ your Shepherd comes to serve you!
