The Prophets' Hope
Isaiah 2:1-5
I.Introduction
A.We live in an impatient age
B.Protecting the season of Advent from being swallowed up by a secular Christmas
C.Celebrating Advent means identifying with the saints of the Old Covenant
D.Much of what God promised them has come to pass for you
E.Like them you must patiently wait for the fullness of what is promised
II. The Church is the rightful heir to the promises of the Old Covenant
A.Isaiah speaks of a glorious day for the people of the LORD
B.You are that people
i.Christ is the promised Anointed One
ii.The message of the kingdom is the same as the Gospel (Acts 19:8, 20:25, 28:23)
iii.The time of the coming of Christ is the “last days” (Acts 2:17; 1 Tim. 3:1; Heb. 1:2; 2 Pet. 3:3)
iv.Titles given to Israel in the Old Covenant are applied to the Church (1 Pet. 2:5; Heb. 12:22; Gal. 4:22-31; Rev. 21:2).
III. The Prophets' longing has been fulfilled in Christ's coming
A.They looked forward to what you look back to
B.The Gospel news they hoped for back then belongs to you today
C.Summed up in the Song of Simeon (Nunc Dimittis)
D.Remember and appreciate your blessedness living on this side of the Manger
IV. We still look for the fulfillment of this promise
A.You do not yet see all things put under Christ's feet (Heb. 2:8)
B.You live in the days in between
i.The Kingdom is progressing slowly but certainly
a)Like a mustard seed becoming a great tree (Matt. 13:31)
b)Like a bit of leavening progressively leavening the whole loaf (Matt. 13:33)
c)Like a “stone cut out without hands... becoming a great mountain that fills the earth (Dan. 2:34-35)
C.You have received the down payment – now patiently await the complete fulfillment
V.Conclusion
A.A glorious day of fulfillment is still coming
B.Now you must walk in the light of the LORD
C.Since you have received the partial fulfillment walk with greater confidence while you wait and work for the dawning of that great day.
